The Commons Guide is an independent guide to co-living: renting a private or shared room in a home you share with other people. It exists to help you decide whether that way of living fits your life, before you sign anything.
Each post is a short read, about five minutes, that answers a question people usually ask while they’re deciding.
What you’ll find here
- What co-living is, and how it differs from an apartment or a roommate listing
- What to expect from move-in, deposits, leases, notice, and move-out
- What daily life in a shared home looks like, from kitchens and laundry to quiet hours and guests
- The real cost of a room, including utilities, furnishings, and the extras people forget
- Common challenges and how people handle them, along with the benefits and the tradeoffs
- Chattanooga neighborhoods, transit, and a monthly look at local rent data
How this guide handles facts
Rent figures, fares, and other local numbers are checked against their sources, and each one carries a date, because numbers like these change. If something can’t be confirmed, it stays out or the post says so plainly.
Practices differ from one home to the next, so the posts say “many operators” or “often” instead of treating one company’s rules as the standard. Read every lease and house agreement for yourself, and ask for anything important in writing.
What this guide isn’t
This guide is an informational resource, not a substitute for your own research, your lease agreement, or professional legal or financial advice where that applies.
