If you’re looking at co-living for the first time, start with a simple question: what comes with the room? Here’s a checklist of what furnished co-living rooms commonly include, and what to confirm with any operator before you sign.
What’s commonly included
- Furnished bedroom. A bed frame, a mattress, a dresser, and closet space are typical. In a shared bedroom, ask whether each person gets their own bed, storage, and closet section.
- Utilities. Electricity, water, sewer, gas, and trash are often built into the monthly rent. Ask which ones are included and whether any have a usage limit.
- Wi-Fi. Internet is usually included. Ask about the speed, and whether it is active before you move in.
- Locks and access. Many houses use keyless or digital locks on the front door and bedrooms. Ask how access works and what happens if you lose a code or key.
- Laundry. A washer and dryer in the house is common. Ask whether it is free to use.
- Shared spaces. A shared kitchen and a furnished living area are standard. Ask how fridge and pantry space is divided.
What you'll still want to bring
Furnished doesn't mean fully stocked; a few things are worth packing or picking up after you move in:
- Bedding, towels, and personal linens
- Everyday cookware and dishes for the shared kitchen
- Toiletries and other personal items
- Any specific furniture preferences beyond what's provided (a reading lamp, a desk and chair, and so on)
- Personal decor if you want to make the room feel more like yours
Questions to ask before you sign
- What is the total monthly price, and exactly what does it cover?
- Which items in the room belong to the operator, and who pays if one is damaged?
- What does the move-in cost include, such as a deposit or fees?
